Center Fielders

by Barry (Ladysmith B.C. Canada)

I'm fifty-nine years old and have been following baseball for many years, beginning in 1956 when the Oakland Oaks franchise was moved up to Vancouver and became the Vancouver Mounties. Over the years, I had the opportunity to see some great defensive center fielders. Vancouver had Lenny Green, Bobby Balcena, and Barry Shetrone, but the best defensive outfielder I ever saw was a member of the Sacramento Solons, Al Heist.

During the 1960 season, Al Heist made the greatest catch I ever saw on a ball hit into right center off the bat of Vancouver Mountie Steve Jankowski. There wasn't a person in Cap Stadium that evening who thought Al would have tracked down that drive, but he hauled it in against the fence in deep right center. I sure wish I had a tape of that catch.
