#41
That World Series Homer
by Fred Antonelli

In 1957 as a 10-year-old, I was consumed by baseball. Although my hometown of Richmond, Virginia, was the Triple-A team for the Yankees, I never became a Yankee fan -- in fact, I hate them to this day.

In the early spring of that year I picked MY TEAM as the Milwaukee Braves. How thrilled I was when they went to the World Series to challenge those "Damn Yankees!"

Game Four was extremely nerve-wracking for a 10-year-old who hung on every pitch. Eddie Mathews, #41, stepped to the plate and lofted to right field what was to me the most beautiful home run I ever saw. The Braves won that game and eventually the '57 World Series over the Yankees! That memory of #41 beating the Yankees in 1957 with that homer is as vivid to me today as it was nearly 44 years ago. Thanks, Eddie!

» Fred Antonelli is semi-retired, living in the Seattle area. He's still an avid baseball fan who roots for the Red Sox & Mariners (who hopefully will beat the Yankees)! Actively played about 75 softball games per spring/summer for several years until knee surgery ended his enjoyment of playing at age 49.
