Jesse Orosco
Pitching for the Cambridge Terriers
by Cam Allan (Cambridge, Ontario)

As a 20-year-old college student, Jesse Orosco spent one summer playing for the Cambridge Terriers of the Major Intercounty Baseball League. The league, comprising 10 cities in southwestern Ontario, is regarded as the best amateur baseball league in Canada. Players such as Dave Lemanczyk, Chris Speier, Geoff Zahn and Rob Ducey, who is from Cambridge, all played in the league on their way to the majors.

The 1977 Terriers finished near the bottom of the league but Orosco's performances that summer boosted their attendance like never before. Jesse pitched a no-hitter in Guelph and missed out on the league ERA title by 1/3 of an inning because he was unable to join the Terriers when the schedule started due to school commitments in Santa Barbara.

A complete baseball player when he was here, Orosco DHed and played first base occassionally. He made the Terriers competitive every night he was in the line-up. Just before returning home, Jesse pitched a one-hit shutout against the league-leading Kitchener Panthers, in a game won by the Terriers. The final score was 1-0, the only run coming on an Orosco home run. His success in the major leagues has been followed closely in this city. The Terriers too would later enjoy success, winning the championship in 1979 and 1983.

» Cam Allan was the Manager/General manager of the Cambridge Terriers from 1977 to 1983. Currently Chairman of the Cambridge Sports Hall Of Fame. Coached for 32 years at Southwood Secondary School in Cambridge, Ontario.
