On May 13, 1969, Dick Selma beat the Padres 19-0.
I have found no confirmation of my memory, nor do I know if such an accomplishment is so noteworthy as to be a 'highlight.' Though I don't believe that I have seen it done since with any regularity.
I was an 8-year-old boy and watched the game on WGN. The Padres only got 3 hits in the game, which means the batting order probably, went close to 3 up - 3 down. That likely would place my memory in the 3rd inning. In which I believe Selma struck out the side on 9 pitches. He would have been a little weaker in the 6th, or 7th, making the accomplishment less likely then.
Many years ago, around 1981, I researched microfilm of the Chicago Tribune, but found no mention of it. Therefore if it was significant, as I believe it is, there should have been a notation.
As a final check, Bill Hands may remember. He would have been charting the game for the next days start. It's very likely he was charting, being the Padres were an expansion team and the Cubs were facing them in the series for the first time ever.
If this could be verified, it may well worth be noting in Selma's stats. His Bleacher-Bum Cheer Leading. The 'pick-off' play with Santo in Sept. @ Philly. Along with striking out the side on 9 pitches, would only add to Selma's and the 1969 Cubs lore.
