| | WHO WAS BUZZY WARES? |
| Q: I am trying to gather information regarding Buzzy Wares and his connection to the 1944 St. Louis Cardinals. I believe he played in the earlier in the century but cannot connect him to the Cardinals in '44. Was he a manager for the Cards? |
| -- Utappraise@aol.com |
|
A: Wares played briefly for the Browns in 1913 and 1914. He never managed the Cardinals, but was a coach with the team from 1930 to 1952. In 1944, he served under manager Billy Southworth as the Cards defeated the crosstown Browns in a six-game World Series. |

| | MINOR-LEAGUE MILWAUKEE BREWERS |
| Q: I am trying to do research on the minor-league Milwaukee Brewers in the 1920s, but have had no luck. My grandfather was on the 1924 roster ... Where can I find more information on this team? |
| -- |
|
A: The 1924 Brewers were members of the Class AA American Association, at that time the highest level in the minors. Their top players were Les Bell, who led the league with a .365 average, 145 runs (tied with St. Paul's Walter Christensen), and 230 hits, and left-hander Rube Walberg, whose 175 strikeouts topped the circuit. |

| | HART'S HOMER |
| Q: I'm writing this question in regards to Jim Ray Hart. He played for the San Francisco Giants from 1964 to 1972. And one particular play I heard of was Jim Ray Hart hitting the game- winning home run off of Sandy Koufax (LA Dodgers). Do you know which game that was? |
| -- SchineeseCruz@aol.com |
|
A: The game was on July 26, 1964 -- you can see the boxscore and ninth-inning play-by-play below. The 1964 homer drove in the last two runs in a four-run ninth inning for the Giants, but it was not really the "game-winner", since the Giants had already taken the lead 3-2. This was the first of two homers Hart hit off Koufax in his career -- the other came in the first inning on September 7, 1966.
