MILDRED "BABE" DIDRIKSON | Pitcher for House of David, 1934. Born in Port Arthur, Texas on June 26, 1914, Babe gravitated to sports at an early age. In 1930, she was hired by an insurance company because of her ability to type over 80 words a minute and average over 40 points a game in basketball. During this same time, Babe competed in many AAU track meets. Earning the right to participate in the 1932 Olympics, she won gold medals for the javelin and hurdles, and silver for the high jump. Returning to Texas, she met promoter Ray Doan, who helped her form the Babe Didrikson All-American Basketball Team. During the spring of 1934, Babe toured baseball spring training camps, competing against Major League players. Seeing this, Doan hired her to travel with one of his House of David teams. Babe was assigned to the Western States Traveling Team, and was scheduled to only pitch the first two innings of every game. She made her House of David debut on May 7th, against Chicago's Logan Squares.
