GARY, 1933 | The House of David Baseball Team is pictured in Gary in 1933. Tom Dewhirst is seen here receiving one of the first aluminum bats made, from members of the Aluminum Corporation of America (ALCOA). It was not a "solid silver" bat, as some people have speculated, nor did Babe Ruth ever play with the team! He was offered the opportunity to participate, but his contract was returned without being signed. He was pictured pulling the beard of a House of David player, but the photo was taken in Florida, where Louis Murphy's team conducted spring training. There are just two of the "myths" that have evolved over time concerning the House of David baseball team.
