PITCHERS WHO COULD HIT WELL
Bob Lemon was one of the best hitting pitchers, as he first came up to the big leagues as an infielder/outfielder. However, his pitching stints in Hawaii during World War II kept his pitching arm in shape and helped him get noticed as a pitcher. Red Ruffing was a very good hitter as well. Cy Young and Walter Johnson were very fine hitting pitchers, although they were best known for their astonishing win totals. Wes Ferrell had the most home runs of any pitcher, making him one of the all-time best hitting pitchers. Wes was an excellent pitcher and is in the Hall of Fame. Lemon was close to Ferrell in lifetime home runs for a pitcher, but Lemon had several of his home runs as an infielder/outfielder.
There’s a story that surrounds one of the worst hitting pitchers, Hall of Famer Lefty Gomez. Lefty once bet Babe Ruth $100 that he could get five hits in a single season. On opening day, he got four hits in the game he pitched, and still went on to lose the bet! He never got another hit that entire season. | » NEXT: My Cleveland Teammates: Bob Lemon, Early Wynn, and Al Rosen |
