Shutout, Knockout

SHUTOUT, KNOCKOUT | On August 13, 1948, before a record night crowd of 51,013 folks at Comiskey Park, Satchel Paige beat the Chicago White Sox 5-0, giving up only three hits. An estimated 20,000 fans were turned away. Paige became the first black player to pitch a complete game, and a shutout, in American League history. Extending the glad hand of congratulations is boxing champion Joe Louis. Louis had recently defeated Jersey Joe Walcott, in New York, to retain the heavyweight championship.
