MY GREATEST DAY IN BASEBALL | On March 13, 1943, Ernest Mehl, writer for the Chicago Daily News, asked Satchel Paige about his greatest day in baseball. A nervous Paige said it happened during the championship game in Santo Domingo, where President Ciudad Trujillo's All-Stars had to beat his political rival's team, the Estrellas de Oriente, for dictatorial rule. Under armed security, Paige and his teammates narrowly escape with a win, 6-5, and their lives. The famed Trujillo team later resurfaced in the Denver Post Tournament. Called the "Chocolate Whizbangs" by one Denver writer, they captured first place and the prize money of $5,179.15. (Courtesy of NoirTech Research, Inc.)
