BUCK AND DIZZY | Even the great ones like Buck O'Neil had a mentor: Dizzy Dismukes (right). The dapper dresser made batters dizzy with his submarine pitches during the 1910s. In 1911, the Stillman College (AL) product defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates, 2-1. The next season, Dismukes pitched his first no-hitter, 1-0, over the Chicago American Giants. He pitched another no-hitter in 1915, defeating the Chicago Giants, 5-0. In 1942, Dismukes became business manager of the Monarchs. Ten years later, when the majors started to integrate teams, the Yankees hired him as a scout. Like O'Neil, Dismukes was known for his arbitration abilities with ball players and upper management.
