1934 MONARCHS | Pictured are members of the 1934 Kansas City Monarchs team. They are, from left to right, Newt Allen, T.J. Young, Turkey Stearnes, Eddie Dwight, Dink Mothell, and Wilber "Bullet" Rogan. That year the Monarchs took part in a national semi-pro Denver Post tournament, the first appearance of a black team in the tournament. The powerful Monarchs lost to the House of David team, which featured Satchel Paige. Stearnes was back with the American Giants in 1935. He led the league in hitting with a .430 average and played in the all-star game. Back with the Detroit Stars in 1937, he was selected to the East-West squad again, marking the only time a Detroit Star appeared in an East-West game. From 1938 until 1941, Stearnes played with the Kansas City Monarchs, making the last of five all-star appearances in 1939.
