BOB SHAWKEY, 1930 | Bob Shawkey took over as manager of the New York Yankees following the death of Miller Huggins. He held the job for just one season, 1930, and the Yankees slipped to third place. Still, Shawkey’s spot in Yankee lore was secure. He was the ace of the pitching staff in the 1920s, he won 20 or more games four times, and he was the starting pitcher in the first game at Yankee Stadium in 1923.
