THE BOSTON DUGOUT, 1904 | Veteran catcher Lou Criger sits with two visitors to the home field. Manager Hugh Duffy (left) and Umpire Tim Hurst (right) take in early season action. Owner of the major league's highest single-season batting average (.438 in 1894), Duffy was running the Phillies club. Later, as a Red Sox coach, he would tutor a young Ted Williams. Hurst was a hard nose umpire in both leagues, often settling arguments over calls with his fists.
