READY AT THE PLATE | William Edward Conroy stands in against opposition pitching in 1903, his first year in the American League. He picked up the nickname "Widow" for his concern for younger boys on sandlot teams and was known as "Wid" throughout the rest of his career. He led the AL twice in total chances per game.
