OVERCOMING ADVERSITY | St. Louis outfielder Danny Hoffman gets set to bat against the Highlanders during the 1908 season. Considered a top prospect for the Philadelphia Athletics in 1904, he was hit in the eye by a pitch from Boston's Jesse Tannehill and never recovered enough vision to stand in against left-handed pitching. He led the AL in stolen bases with 46 in 1905 and ended his nine year career with a .256 batting average.
