		2000 ť The Indians sign free agent P Scott Sanders after his agent had spurned a multi-year contract with the Brewers. 1999 ť The Brewers sign free agent P Jim Abbott to a contract. The Cardinals sign free agent 2B Carlos Baerga to a contract. 1997 ť The Red Sox trade DH Jose Canseco and cash to the Athletics for P John Wasdin. 1993 ť The Royals sign free agents Hubie Brooks and Frank DiPino. 1982 ť Philadelphia sends veteran SS Larry Bowa and minor league infielder Ryne Sandberg to the Cubs in exchange for SS Ivan DeJesus. 1977 ť Boston sports writers honor Luis Tiant as the Red Sox most valuable pitcher. This is the fifth year in a row that El Tiante has won this honor, a record for the award begun in 1952. 1966 ť Wisconsin State Circuit Court Judge Elmer W. Roller rules that the Braves must stay in Milwaukee, or the National League must promise Wisconsin an expansion team for the 1966 season. Judge Robert Cannon of Wisconsin is named a full-time administrator of the Players' Association at a $50,000 salary. 1963 ť The Hall of Fame Special Veterans Committee votes in Sam Rice, Eppa Rixey, Elmer Flick, and John Clarkson. 1956 ť The New York Giants football team of the NFL switches its home games to Yankee Stadium, leading to speculation that the baseball team will soon vacate the Polo Grounds as well. 1953 ť In another deal that GM Lane pulls over the protests of Paul Richards, the White Sox send slugging 1B Eddie Robinson along with OF Ed McGhee and SS Joe DeMaestri to the A's for two-time batting champ Ferris Fain and infielder Robert Wilson. 1949 ť Fred Saigh buys out the interest of Robert Hannegan and now controls 90 percent of the Cardinals' stock. Saigh and Hannegan had swung the deal in 1947 with only $60,300 in cash in a $4 million deal. Hannegan came out with $866,000 profit in two years. 1944 ť Lou Perini, Guido Rugo, and Joseph Maney buy control of the Braves and oust Casey Stengel as manager. 1943 ť The Cubs pay cash to the Reds to get P Paul Derringer. 1937 ť In Cincinnati, the worst flood in the city's history inundates Crosley Field, covering home plate with as much as 21 feet of water. The lower grandstand is completely covered. Reds pitchers Gene Schott and Lee Grissom row a boat out from the center field wall and the resulting photo appears across the country. 1933 ť Veteran 1B Joe Judge of the Senators is released. He will sign with the Dodgers. 1927 ť Citing accuser Dutch Leonard's refusal to appear at the hearings of January 5th, Judge Landis issues a lengthy decision clearing Ty Cobb and Tris Speaker of any wrongdoing and ordering them reinstated by their teams. Both are then made free agents. Connie Mack will sign Cobb on February 8th. Speaker will sign with Washington on January 31st for a reported $35,000. The Tribe has already chosen Jack McAllister as manager. 1909 ť Lou Criger sends a telegram to Boston fans expressing his regrets on being traded by the Beaneaters to the St. Louis Browns. 1888 ť Brooklyn keeps five of the recently purchased Mets players and sells the rest of the squad and four Brooklyn players to Kansas City for $7,000.
