St. Louis defeats Colorado, 8-3. Both leadoff hitters—Bernard Gilkey for the Cardinals and Trenidad Hubbard for the Rockies—homer in the 1st inning, marking the 1st time this has happened in the NL since 1986. One near tragedy occurs when 6-year-old Cameron Wilson suffers a skull fracture when hit by a foul ball off the bat of Eric Young. He will be okay.
» August 21, 1996: The Rockies end Andy Benes' 10-game win streak, beating the Cardinals, 10–2. The Rocks also claim Giants C Steve Decker, while the Giants claim the Rocks Trenidad Hubbard, essentially trading both waived players. » May 3, 2000: The Major League Baseball Players Association again denies several major-leaguers admission to the union. The players crossed picket lines during the 1994-95 strike becoming replacement players. These players don't pay union dues, receive full pension benefits, and can to use the Association's grievance procedure. However, they do not receive a share of royalties from the sale of baseball merchandise. Historian Stuart Shea notes the players are the only ex-replacements currently on major-league rosters: Benny Agbayani and Rick Reed of the Mets; Trenidad Hubbard and Kerry Ligtenberg of the Braves; Cory Lidle and Damian Miller of the Diamondbacks; Keith Osik and Rich Loiselle of the Pirates; Matt Herges of the Dodgers; Joe Slusarski of the Astros; Shane Spencer of the Yankees; Jeff Tam of the A's; Donne Wall of the Padres. » July 31, 2000: The Braves obtain OF B.J. Surhoff and P Gabe Molina from the Orioles in exchange for OF Trenidad Hubbard and two minor leaguers. |
