IN THE NEWS: The Yankees score four runs in the bottom of the 8th inning to come from behind and defeat the Angels, 8–5, in the 1st game of their division series. Derek Jeter, Jason Giambi, Bernie Williams, and Rondell White all homer for NY while Troy Glaus hits a pair of home runs for Anaheim. Steve Karsay gets the win in relief. This is the Angels first time in the playoffs since 1986, but hey face the same starting pitcher today as they did in their last playoff appearance: Roger Clemens.
The Cardinals pound Randy Johnson for six runs in six innings and go on to defeat Arizona, 12–2, in the opener of their division series. Jim Edmonds and Scott Rolen homer for St. Louis while Matt Morris gets the victory.
In a sloppily played game, the Twins bounce back from a 5–1 deficit to beat Oakland by a score of 7–5 in their division series opener. Corey Koskie and Doug Mientkiewicz go deep for Minnesota and Brad Radke gets credit for the win.
The Mets fire manager Bobby Valentine. In Texas, the Rangers do the same to manager Jerry Narron.
IN THE NEWS: The Angels even their series with the Yankees at one game apiece by coming from behind to take an 8–6 decision. Anaheim gets home runs from Tim Salmon, Garret Anderson, Troy Glaus, and Scott Spiezio while Alfonso Soriano and Derek Jeter stroke round–trippers for NY. Francisco Rodriguez gets his 1st ML win in relief.
The Giants shock the Braves by pounding Tom Glavine for six runs in five innings on their way to an 8–5 win in the 1st game of their division series. Gary Sheffield and Javy Lopez homer in the 8th to make the game close, but Robb Nen comes in to save the game for starter Russ Ortiz.
The Athletics pummel the Twins, 9–1, to even their division series at one game each. Cristian Guzman homers for Minnesota's run while Eric Chavez hits a round–tripper for Oakland. Mark Mulder gets the win with six strong innings for the A's.
The Brewers fire manager Jerry Royster.
Alex Cabrera hits his 55th home run of the season, off Osaka reliever Akira Okamoto, to tie the Japanese League record set by Sadaharu Oh in 1964 and matched by Tuffy Rhodes last year. Like Rhodes, Cabrera will see few good pitches for the remaining games.
IN THE NEWS: The Cardinals take a commanding two games to none lead in their series with the Diamondbacks by eking out a 2–1 victory. J.D. Drew homers for St. Louis and Jeff Fassero gets the win in relief.
The Braves defeat the Giants, 7–3, to even their series at one game apiece. Kevin Millwood hurls six strong innings for the victory while Javy Lopez and Vinny Castilla support his pitching with home runs. Rich Aurilia, Barry Bonds, and JD Snow all homer in a losing cause for SF.

The A's hit four home runs and Barry Zito hurls the club to a 6–3 win over the Twins to give Oakland a two games to one lead in their division series. Ray Durham hits an inside–the–park homer to open the game and Scott Hatteberg follows with another round–tripper. Jermaine Dye and Terrence Long also homer for Oakland.

The Cardinals oust the defending world champion Diamondbacks by taking a 6–3 win to sweep into the NLCS. David Dellucci and Rod Barajas homer for Arizona, but it's not enough to stop St. Louis. Jeff Fassero picks up his second win of the series in relief.
The Braves take a 2–1 lead in their series with SF by pounding the Giants, 10–2. Keith Lockhart homers for Atlanta and Barry Bonds for SF. Greg Maddux goes the first six innings for the victory.
The Twins even their series with the A's behind Eric Milton, winning by a score of 11–2. Doug Mientkiewicz homers for Minnesota and Miguel Tejada for Oakland.
IN THE NEWS: The Twins defeat the A's, 5–4, to take their division series and move on to the ALCS against the Anaheim Angels. Brad Radke wins his second game of the series for Minnesota while being backed by AJ Pierzynski's home run. Ray Durham and Mark Ellis homer for Oakland in a losing cause. The Twins win comes one month to the day after they ended Oakland's 20–game winning streak.
The Giants even their division series at two games apiece by defeating the Braves, 8–3. Livan Hernandez gets the win while Tom Glavine takes his second loss in the series. Rich Aurilia homers for SF.
