IN THE NEWS: The Pirates sign free agent P Mike Williams to a 2-year contract. Williams began last season with Pittsburgh until being traded to Houston in July.

Friday, January 4th

IN THE NEWS: The Twins hire 3rd–base coach Ron Gardenhire as their manager, replacing Tom Kelly who resigned in October.

The Rockies sign free agent C Tony Eusebio to a 1-year contract.

Tony Tavares resigns as president of Anaheim Sports Inc. He had been president of the Anaheim Angels since May 1996.

IN THE NEWS: The Diamondbacks obtain submarine–style relief P Mike Myers from the Rockies in exchange for OF Jack Cust and catcher JD Closser.

Tuesday, January 8th

IN THE NEWS: Ozzie Smith is elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the baseball writers in his first year of eligibility. Smith, named on 91.7 percent of the ballots, is the 37th player to be elected in his first year.

IN THE NEWS: The Rangers sign free agent OF Juan Gonzalez to a 2-year contract.

Rep. John Conyers Jr. of Michigan says Bud Selig should resign because he appeared to violate major league rules in a 1995 loan from a company controlled by the owner of the Minnesota Twins. Conyers, The House Judiciary Committee's ranking Democrat says the loan created an "irreparable conflict of interest" for Selig in his plan to fold two franchises, a proposal that most likely would include the Twins." Selig rejects the suggestion saying, "The suggestions made in your letter are wholly unacceptable."

Thursday, January 10th

IN THE NEWS: The Yankees sign free agent P David Wells to a 2-year contract.

The Rockies sign free agent P Rick White to a 1-year contract.

Bud Selig asks the players to accept a luxury tax that would slow the increase of salaries. He also proposes that teams vastly increase the amount of local revenue they share.

IN THE NEWS: The Diamondbacks sign free agent P Rick Helling to a 1-year contract.

Monday, January 21st

IN THE NEWS: In a complicated three–team deal, the Colorado Rockies trade Alex Ochoa and two prospects to the Mets for veterans Benny Agbayani and Todd Zeile. The Rocks will pay $2 mil of Zeile's $6 million contract, while the Mets agree to pay $3.25 million of it, plus a $500,000 buyout payment on the contract. The Mets receive minor leaguers Ross Gload and Craig House from Colorado. The 3rd team in the deal, the Brewers, pay $250,000 of it. The Brewers then send slugger Jeremy Burnitz, starter Jeff D'Amico, INF Lou Collier, and two prospects to the Mets. New York ships pinchhitter/IF Lenny Harris, P Glendon Rusch, and Ochoa to Milwaukee. The Mets have now replaced half of their 2001 roster.

IN THE NEWS: The Mariners deal 3B David Bell to the Giants in exchange for recently–acquired IF Desi Relaford and cash.

The Brewers sign free agent OF Matt Stairs to a 1-year contract.

Monday, January 28th

IN THE NEWS: The Rangers continue to shore up their pitching staff by signing free agent Ismael Valdes to a 1-year contract.

Tuesday, January 29th

IN THE NEWS: The White Sox trade OF Chris Singleton to the Orioles for minor league 2B Willie Harris.

Wednesday, January 30th

IN THE NEWS: The Phillies sign free agent OF Ricky Ledee to a 1-year contract.

The Pirates sign free agent 2B Pokey Reese to a 2-year contract. Pittsburgh is Reese's 4th team since the end of the 2001 season. He finished the year with Cincinnati, and then was traded to the Rockies and the Red Sox in a span of three days in December. Boston did not offer him a contract, making him a free agent.

The Mariners sign free agent P James Baldwin to a 1-year contract.

Thursday, January 31st

IN THE NEWS: Philadelphia Phillies announcer Harry Kalas is voted the Ford C. Frick Award. He will be inducted into the broadcasters' wing of the Hall of Fame on July 28.
