IN THE NEWS: In an amazing case of history repeating itself, the Yankees again come from two runs down with two outs in the 9th inning to defeat the Diamondbacks, 3-2 in 12 innings. Byung-Hyun Kim is again victimized, this time by Scott Brosius' 2-run home run in the 9th. Alfonso Soriano's single wins it in the 12th. Steve Finley and Rod Barajas homer in the 5th for Arizona's runs.
Former Red Sox manager Jimy Williams signs a 3-year contract to take over the reins of the Houston Astros.
IN THE NEWS: The Diamondbacks even the Series at three games apiece with a 15-2 win over the Yankees in Game 6. Randy Johnson gets the win for Arizona while Danny Bautista drives in five runs. Arizona knocks out a World Series-record 22 hits, and scores eight runs in the 3rd inning.
IN THE NEWS: The Arizona Diamondbacks win the first World Series of their 4-year existence with a come-from-behind 3-2 win over the Yankees. Alfonso Soriano breaks a 1-1 tie with a home run in the 8th inning to give NY the lead, but Arizona comes back with two runs in the bottom half of the 9th off Mariano Rivera to get the win. Luis Gonzalez drives home the winning run while Randy Johnson gets the win in relief. Johnson and Curt Schilling share the World Series MVP award.
IN THE NEWS: Major league owners vote to eliminate two teams before the start of next season. Minnesota, Montreal, Florida, and Tampa Bay are the teams under consideration.
Gold Glove award winners are announced. Ivan Rodriguez wins his 10th straight to tie Johnny Bench for the most by a catcher, Greg Maddux wins his 12th straight to extend his NL record for pitchers, and Roberto Alomar wins for the 10th time, the most ever for a 2B.
IN THE NEWS: The Dodgers obtain P Omar Daal from the Phillies in exchange for minor league Ps Eric Junge and Jesus Cordero.
IN THE NEWS: Cardinals' 1B Mark McGwire announces his retirement, saying "I am unable to perform at a level equal to the salary the orgainzation would be paying me." McGwire's 583 career home runs place him 5th on the all-time list.
IN THE NEWS: Cardinals' 3B Albert Pujols is the unanimous choice for NL Rookie of the Year. In the AL, Ichiro Suzuki takes rookie honors.
IN THE NEWS: Randy Johnson wins his 3rd consecutive NL Cy Young Award.
IN THE NEWS: Seattle's Lou Piniella is named the AL Manager of the Year. Philadelphia's Larry Bowa takes honors in the NL.
Former NL MVP Ken Caminiti is arrested in Houston on drug possession charges after being found with crack cocaine.
After Marvin Miller, former head of the players union, calls on Bud Selig to resign because of a conflict of interest with the Twins contraction and his ownership, the Commissioner reacts angrily. "St. Louis is closer to Minneapolis than Milwaukee is," misstates Selig in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "Are the Red Sox going to benefit if Montreal is contracted? No. I don't think the Brewers will gain either. Its so outrageous and not worthy of comment," he comments.
IN THE NEWS: Roger Clemens wins his 6th AL Cy Young Award.
IN THE NEWS: A Minnesota judge issues a temporary injunction that orders the Twins to play their full home schedule and prevents owner Carl Pohlad from selling the team to anyone who will move it. While this ruling will be appealed, it will be difficult to get the injunction overturned in enough time to contract the Twins for a potential 2002 season.
IN THE NEWS: San Francisco OF Barry Bonds wins the NL Most Valuable Player award. He becomes the first player in history to win the award four times.
IN THE NEWS: Ichiro Suzuki of the Seattle Mariners is named the AL Most Valuable Player. He becomes the second player in history to win both the Rookie of the Year and MVP honors in the same season.
IN THE NEWS: The Rangers sign free agent P Todd Van Poppel to a 3-year contract.
IN THE NEWS: The White Sox send IF Herbert Perry to the Rangers in exchange for a player to be named.
IN THE NEWS: Arizona P Curt Schilling wins the 2001 Hutch Award, given each year by Seattle's Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center to a player who displays "honor, courage & dedication to baseball while overcoming adversity in their personal or professional lives."
