IN THE NEWS: Major league baseball reportedly gives John Henry permission to sell the Florida Marlins to Montreal Expos owner, Jeffrey Loria. The Expos are expected to be either contracted or taken over by Major League Baseball, which would buy the team from Loria in case contraction is aborted, leaving him an opportunity to own the Marlins.

Friday, December 7th

IN THE NEWS: Figures released by major league baseball show that the Milwaukee Brewers were baseball's most profitable club, after revenue sharing, in 2001. Without revenue sharing, the Brewers were the fourth-most profitable team.

The Mets send 3B Robin Ventura to the Yankees in exchange for OF David Justice. It is the first deal between the two New York teams in eight years.

The Blue Jays trade P Billy Koch to the A's. In return, Toronto gets minor league 3B Eric Hinske and minor league P Justin Miller.

The Orioles sign free agent OF Brady Anderson to a 1-year contract.

IN THE NEWS: The Yankees sign free agent P Steve Karsay to a 4-year contract.

The Braves sign free agent 3B Vinny Castilla to a 2-year contract.

IN THE NEWS: The Blue Jays send SS Alex Gonzalez to the Cubs in exchange for P Felix Heredia and a player to be named.

The Cardinals sign free agent P Jason Isringhausen to a 4-year contract.

Tuesday, December 11th

IN THE NEWS: The Mets obtain 12-time All-Star Roberto Alomar in an 8-player deal with the Indians. In addition to Alomar, New York also receives P Mike Bacsik and OF-1B Danny Peoples. Cleveland gets OFs Matt Lawton and bluechip prospect Alex Escobar, P Jerrod Riggan, and pitching prospect Billy Traber.

In a swap of outfielders, the Reds send Dmitri Young to the Tigers in exchange for Juan Encarnacion. Cincinnati also gets P Luis Pineda in the deal.

The Mariners and Padres complete a 6-player deal that sends P Brett Tomko, SS Ramon Vazquez, and C Tom Lampkin to San Diego. C Ben Davis, IF Alex Arias, and P Wascar Serrano move on to Seattle.

Former USC P Mark Prior wins the Golden Spikes Award as the top amateur baseball player in the US. Prior signed a 5-year contract with the Cubs after being selected in the June draft.

The Rangers sign free agent P Jay Powell to a 3-year contract.

IN THE NEWS: The Yankees sign free agent All-Star 1B Jason Giambi to a 7-year, $120 million contract. In another move, New York acquired OF John Vander Wal from San Francisco in exchange for P Jay Witasick.

The Dodgers obtain P Paul Quantrill and IF Cesar Izturis from the Blue Jays in exchange for Ps Luke Prokopec and Chad Ricketts.

The Pirates send P Todd Ritchie and C Lee Evans to the White Sox. In return, Pittsburgh gets pitchers Kip Wells, Sean Lowe, and Josh Fogg.

The Red Sox send troubled OF Carl Everett to the Rangers in exchange for P Darren Oliver.

The Phillies trade P Chris Brock to the Orioles for P John Wasdin.

The Mets sign free agent OF Roger Cedeno to a 4-year, $18 million contract and free agent P David Weathers to a 3-year pact worth $9.4 million.

The Tigers sign free agent IF-OF Craig Paquette to a 2-year contract.

IN THE NEWS: The Mets send recently-acquired OF David Justice and $1.2 million to the Oakland A's in exchange for Ps Mark Guthrie and Tyler Yates.

A federal judge upholds an arbitrator's decision that ordered major league baseball to rehire nine of the 22 umpires who lost their jobs following a failed mass resignation two years ago.

IN THE NEWS: The Mariners get 2-time All-Star 3B Jeff Cirillo from the Rockies in exchange for Ps Jose Paniagua, Dennis Stark, and Brian Fuentes.

IN THE NEWS: The Red Sox acquire P Dustin Hermanson from the Cardinals in exchange for three minor leaguers—OF Rick Asadoorian and 1Bs Luis Garcia and Dustin Brisson.

The busy Mets make another deal, obtaining P Shawn Estes from the Giants in exchange for OF Tsuyoshi Shinjo and now expendable infielder Desi Relaford. They also sign free agent P Pedro Astacio, suffering from a torn labrum, to a one year contract worth $5 million.

IN THE NEWS: The Yankees sign free agent OF Rondell White, who played for the Cubs this past year, to a 2-year contract.

The Indians sign free agent SS Ricky Gutierrez to a 3-year contract.

Tuesday, December 18th

IN THE NEWS: The Cardinals sign free agent 1B Tino Martinez to a 3-year contract.

The Royals sign 2B-OF Chuck Knoblauch to a 1-year contract.

The Reds, who tried to sign Pokey Reese in April to a 4-year, $21 million contract, ship the second baseman and P Dennys Reyes to the Rockies for pitchers Gabe White and Luke Hudson. In turn, Colorado sends Reese tomorrow to the Red Sox for C Scott Hatteberg. The Sox will make a Pokey a free agent by not tendering him a contract and he'll sign in January with Pittsburgh. Hatteberg will go the same route and sign with the A's.

The Indians send troubled P John Rocker to the Rangers in exchange for minor league P Dave Elder.

Wednesday, December 19th

IN THE NEWS: The Red Sox sign free agent P John Burkett to a 2-year contract.

The Cubs sign free agent OF Moises Alou to a 3-year contract. They also trade OF Michael Tucker to the Royals in exchange for a player to be named.

The Rangers sign free agent P Dave Burba to a 1-year contract.

The Angels sign free agent P Dennis Cook to a 1-year contract.

Thursday, December 20th

IN THE NEWS: The Braves sign free agent P Albie Lopez to a 1-year contract.

The Dodgers sign free agent P Hideo Nomo to a 2-year contract. It is Nomo's second tour of duty with the Dodgers, whom he first played for in 1995.

The limited partners of the Red Sox vote unanimously to sell the team to a group led by Florida Marlins owner John Henry and former Padres owner Tom Werner. The $660 million price, plus an assumption of $40 in debt, would double the record price for a baseball team.
