IN THE NEWS: The Giants defeat the Expos, 18-0, as pitcher Shawn Estes hits one grand slam and narrowly misses another. The game is the Giants largest shutout win in modern times breaking their previous record, 16-0, set on July 3, 1949, against the Dodgers; the previous SF record was 14-0, against the Reds, on August 23, 1961. Their all time record is a 24-0 win against the Buffalo Bisons, on May 27, 1885. On the other side, the game was also the worst shutout loss in Expos history, breaking the record of 16-0, set against the Cardinals, on August 11, 1980.

The Phillies defeat the Astros, 9-7, overcoming a 7-0 deficit. It is the 2nd time within a week that Houston has blown a 7-run advantage. The Astros also lose CF Roger Cedeno who breaks two bones in his right hand and will miss two months.

The Reds defeat the Dodgers, 10-3, with OF Dante Bichette leading the way going 5-for-6, with a double and four RBIs.

The Cardinals gaff the Marlins, 5-1, as Mark McGwire hits his 20th home run of the year. He becomes the fastest player to ever reach 20 homers, doing so in his 35th game, six fewer than Mickey Mantle in 1956 and McGwire himself in 1998.

The Angels defeat the Twins, 6-5, in 10 innings. 1B Mo Vaughn goes 5-for-5 for Anaheim, with two doubles and two RBIs.

Sixteen Dodger players and three coaches are handed suspensions for going into the stands during a fight with fans at Wrigley Field on May 16. The 19 suspensions are believed to be the most ever stemming from one incident. The suspensions totaled 60 games for the players and 24 games for the coaches. All 19 individuals were also assessed fines.

IN THE NEWS: The Yankees defeat the A's Olivares, 4-1, on Pettitte's 2-hitter. In the 6th inning, Oakland 2B Randy Velarde turns an unassisted triple play, just the 11th in history, on a line drive by Shane Spencer. With runners on 1st and 2nd running with the pitch, Velarde tags Jorge Posada as he nears 2B, then touches the bag to retire Tino Martinez. In 1995, while with the Yankees, Velarde turned an unassisted triple play against the Dodgers in spring training following the strike.

The Dodgers defeat the Mets, 4-1. Mets SS Rey Ordonez breaks his left forearm on a tag play in the 1st inning and will be out the season. His arm hits the helmet of a sliding F.P. Santangelo. The Mets will fill in with various bodies for two months before renting Mike Bordick from the O's.
