IN THE NEWS: On Canada's 133rd birthday, Florida's Ryan Dempster and Montreal's Mike Johnson hook up in a rare matchup of Canadian starters. Dempster comes out on top as the Marlins defeat the Expos by a score of 6–5. Johnson hails from Edmonton, Alberta, while Dempster is a native of Sechelt, British Columbia. Theirs is the first matchup of Canadian-born starters since last September when Dempster took on Eric Gagne of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

IN THE NEWS: The White Sox outslug the Royals, 14-10, scoring eight runs in the 5th inning. Chicago becomes the 1st team since the 1984 Detroit Tigers to win 12 straight games on the road.

The Marlins defeat the Mets, 2-0 on Derrek Lee's 2-run homer in the 9th, off Turk Wendell. Jesus Sanchez, 0–6 versus NY, is the winner. The loss ends C Mike Piazza's streak of 15 consecutive games with an RBI, two short of the major league mark.

The Red Sox beat the Twins, 11-8, hitting four home runs and scoring nine runs in the 4th inning.

IN THE NEWS: The Cardinals defeat the Reds, 14-3. St. Louis rookie C Keith McDonald becomes only the 3rd player in St. Louis history to homer in his 1st major league at bat, doing so as a pinch-hitter in the 8th inning.

In the Tigers 11–0 blowout over Tampa Bay, Shane Halter takes over the catching duties in the 8th from Detroit's Brad Ausmus. Halter has now played every position in the majors: with the Royals, he pitched on July 17, 1998. Dave Mlicki is the winner with Dean Palmer powering a pair of home runs.

The Reds defeat the Cardinals, 12-6. St. Louis rookie C Keith McDonald homers in the 2nd inning, becoming only the 2nd person in major league history to hit home runs in each of his 1st two big league at bats. Bob Nieman, in 1951, is the other. McDonald walks his 3rd time up.

Dodgers P Orel Hershiser announces his retirement.

The American Sportscasters Association names Dodgers legend Vin Scully as the No. 1 sportscaster of the 20th century. Howard Cosell finishes 2nd, followed by Mel Allen and Red Barber.

Wells becomes just the 2nd pitcher since 1988 to win 15 games before the All-Star break. The portly ace wins his 13th consecutive game on the road, stretching back to September 7, 1999. His only mistake is serving up a gopher to reliever Felipe Lira, who connects for his 1st ML homer. Jose Cruz, Jr. hits his 20th homer, joining teammates Carlos Delgado, Tony Batista, and Raul Mondesi as Toronto becomes the first team in ML history with four players hitting 20 homers before the All-Star break.

IN THE NEWS: The Yankees whip the Mets by identical 4-2 scores in both ends of an unusual day-night doubleheader. With the 1st game played at Shea Stadium and the nightcap at Yankee Stadium, it is the 1st time since 1903 that two teams played two games in different stadiums on the same day. Dwight Gooden wins the first game with a six inning effort in his first start since returning to the Yankees. Roger Clemens wins the night cap and precipitate a near brawl when he drills Mike Piazza in the helmet with an inside fastball. Piazza suffers a concussion.

The Reds defeat the Indians, 14-5, as Ken Griffey Jr. hits two home runs and drives in eight runs for Cincinnati. Chris Stynes strokes five hits for the Reds.

The Tigers defeat the Brewers, 4-2 in 15 innings. Twenty Milwaukee batters strike out in the contest to set a new franchise mark.

A contract from Shoeless Joe Jackson's sale of his Chicago pool hall to teammate Lefty Williams, sells for $36,098. The contract, dated Oct. 6, 1921, is for just $1.
