IN THE NEWS: The St. Louis Cardinals take out insurance by signing veterans Shawon Dunston, OF Brian McRae, 1B Eduardo Perez, and C Rick Wilkins.

IN THE NEWS: The Mets sign free agent vet Dennis Springer to a contract.

Thursday, February 10th

IN THE NEWS: The Mariners accommodate OF Ken Griffey Jr. trading him to his hometown Reds in exchange for P Brett Tomko, OF Mike Cameron, IF Antonio Perez, and P Jake Meyer. The Reds resisted giving up INF Pokey Reese.

Tuesday, February 15th

IN THE NEWS: The Boston Red Sox sign outfielder Carl Everett to a three-year contract.

18th The Athletics obtain OF Jeremy Giambi from the Royals for P Brett Laxton. Giambi joins his brother, Jason Giambi, in Oakland, becoming the 6th brother combo to play for the team.

IN THE NEWS: A Florida Department of Corrections report says Yankees OF Darryl Strawberry tested positive for cocaine on January 19.

Wednesday, February 23rd

IN THE NEWS: The Padres obtain OF Al Martin from the Pirates for OF John Vander Wal, and pitchers Jim Sak and Geraldo Padua. San Diego also signs pitcher Matt Clement to a four year agreement.

Thursday, February 24th

IN THE NEWS: The National Labor Relations Board certifies the results of the November election that kicked out the Major League Umpires Association and replaced it with the newly-formed World Umpires Association. About 50 of the 71 major league umpires have joined the new union. The decision ends Richie Phillips' 21-year reign as union chief.

Friday, February 25th

IN THE NEWS: Hall of Fame OF Frank Robinson is hired by major league baseball to handle on-field disciplinary matters. Previously, such matters were handled by the individual league offices.

Monday, February 28th

IN THE NEWS: Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig announces the Yankees OF Darryl Strawberry is suspended for one year for having tested positive for cocaine last month. It is Strawberry's 3rd cocaine-related suspension.

AL umpire John Hirschbeck is elected as the 1st president of the World Umpires Association, which was certified last week by the NLRB.

Tuesday, February 29th

IN THE NEWS: Manager Sparky Anderson, 19th century star Bid McPhee, and Negro League player Norman "Turkey" Stearnes are elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee.
