IN THE NEWS: The Indians sign free agent P Scott Kamieniecki to a 2-year contract.

Sunday, December 5th

IN THE NEWS: Major league baseball and ESPN agreed to settle their lawsuit by signing a new 6-year, $800 million deal. The suit involved ESPN's decision to give NFL football games priority over late-season Sunday night baseball games on its main channel.

Tuesday, December 7th

IN THE NEWS: In a disappointment to the Mets, the Mariners sign free agent 1B John Olerud to a 3-year contract.

Wednesday, December 8th

IN THE NEWS: The Rockies sign free agent OF Tom Goodwin to a 3-year contract and tomorrow they ink free agent C Brent Mayne to a 2-year contract.

IN THE NEWS: The Orioles sign free agent DH Harold Baines to a contract.

Friday, December 10th

IN THE NEWS: The Mets obtain P Jesse Orosco from the Orioles in exchange for P Chuck McElroy. The 43-year-old Orosco last played for the Mets in 1987.

The Cubs sign free agent C Joe Girardi, late of the Yankees, to a 3-year contract.

Babe Ruth is voted Player of the Century by an Associated Press panel. Willie Mays comes in second.

Saturday, December 11th

IN THE NEWS: The Cubs obtain OF Damon Buford from the Red Sox in exchange for IF Manny Alexander.

The Mets sign free agent 1B-3B Todd Zeile to a 3-year contract.

Sunday, December 12th

IN THE NEWS: The Cubs obtain P Ismael Valdes (9–14) and 2B Eric Young from the Dodgers for pitchers Terry Adams and Chad Ricketts, and a player to be named. Despite missing 40 games, Young swiped 51 bases in 1999.

The Phillies obtain P Chris Brock from the Giants in exchange for C Bobby Estalella.

The Royals obtain IF Jeff Reboulet from the Orioles for a player to be named. Tomorrow they trade a player to be named later to the Giants for P Jerry Spradlin.

Monday, December 13th

IN THE NEWS: The Diamondbacks obtain P Brad Clontz from the Pirates for a player to be named.

The Rangers obtain OF Chad Curtis from the Yankees in exchange for minor league pitchers Sam Marsonek and Brandon Knight.

The Devil Rays sign free agent OF Greg Vaughn to a 4-year contract.

In what is believed to be baseball's first 4-team swap since 1985, the Rockies obtain 3B Jeff Cirillo, Ps Rolando Arrojo and Scott Karl, and IF Aaron Ledesma, the Devil Rays obtain 3B Vinny Castilla, the Brewers obtain Ps Jamey Wright and Jimmy Haynes, and C Henry Blanco, and the Athletics obtain P Justin Miller.

The Marlins obtain OF Brant Brown from the Pirates in exchange for OF Bruce Aven.

Red Sox P Tom Gordon has ligament reconstruction surgery on his right elbow, and will miss the 2000 season. According to the Red Sox, there is only a 15% to 20% chance that he will ever pitch again.

Tuesday, December 14th

IN THE NEWS: The Pirates sign free agent OF Wil Cordero to a 3-year contract worth $9 million.

The Royals sign free agent C Brian Johnson to a contract.

15th In a swap of unrelated Everetts, the Red Sox obtain OF Carl Everett from the Astros in exchange for SS Adam Everett and P Greg Miller.

The Royals obtain OF Todd Dunwoody from the Marlins in exchange for 1B Sean McNally.

Thursday, December 16th

IN THE NEWS: The Indians sign free agent P Chuck Finley to a 3-year contract.

The Brewers sign free agent IF Jose Hernandez to a 3-year contract.

The Cardinals sign free agent C Mike Matheny to a contract.

IN THE NEWS: The Dodgers sign free agent and former Dodger star P Orel Hershiser to a contract.

IN THE NEWS: The Brewers trade 2B Fernando Vina to the Cardinals for P Juan Acevedo and two minor leaguers to be named.

The Devil Rays sign free agent OF Gerald Williams to a 2-year contract.

The Expos sign free agent P Graeme Lloyd to a 3-year contract.

The Cubs sign SS Ricky Gutierrez to a 2-year contract.

The Mariners sign free agent 2B Mark McLemore and OF Stan Javier to contracts.

Tuesday, December 21st

IN THE NEWS: The Mariners sign free agent P Arthur Rhodes to a 4-year contract.

The Dodgers are fined $50,000 and banned from scouting any Dominican Republic players for one year as a penalty for having signed 3B Adrian Beltre as a 15-year-old. Beltre is not given his free agency, according to Commissioner Bud Selig, because he participated in the scheme, and because the claim for free agency was made too late. The players' association is expected to file a grievance in the matter.

Wednesday, December 22nd

IN THE NEWS: The Braves obtain 2B Quilvio Veras, 1B Wally Joyner, and OF Reggie Sanders from the Padres in exchange for 1B Ryan Klesko, 2B Bret Boone, and P Jason Shiell.

Kip Wells, drafted in the first round by the Chicago White Sox, finally signs for 1.495 million plus an invite to the White Sox spring camp.

The Expos obtain inconsistent P Hideki Irabu from the Yankees in exchange for P Jake Westbrook and two players to be named. P Christian Parker will be one of those named.

The Red Sox sign free agent P Jeff Fassero to a contract.

The Orioles sign free agent P Buddy Groom to a 2-year contract.

In an interview in Sports Illustrated magazine, Atlanta Braves P John Rocker offends virtually every race and ethnic group in a hateful outburst. Community leaders, media, management, coaches and teammates alike call for action to be taken against the lefty who had 38 saves for Atlanta this past season.

Thursday, December 23rd
