IN THE NEWS: Prior to a game with the Royals, with his team in the midst of a slump, Angels' batting coach Rod Carew suggests the club use a single bat through the starting lineup as a way of loosening up the players. When leadoff hitter Orlando Palmeiro strikes out in bottom half of the first inning, he drops the bat for the next hitter to use. Umpire Tim Tschida sees this as an act of defiance and ejects Palmeiro from the game. Anaheim manager Terry Collins eventually convinces Tschida that Palmeiro wasn't trying to show him up, and the umpire changes his decision and allows him to stay in the game. The Angels go on to defeat the Royals, 4-3.

The Mariners send vet Butch Huskey to Boston for AAA pitcher Robert Ramsey. Tomorrow, the send vet 1B David Segui to Toronto for minor leaguers Tom Davey and Steve Sinclair.

Saturday, August 7th

IN THE NEWS: Just one day after Tony Gwynn reaches the historic milestone, Devil Rays' 3B Wade Boggs also gets the 3000th hit of his career in Tampa Bay's 15-10 loss to Cleveland. Boggs goes 3-for-4 in the contest, reaching the 3000 mark with a 6th inning home run off Chris Haney.

The Braves infielders looked inept when they let an infield pop-up drop between them in the 9th inning of a 15-4 victory over the Giants. But SS Ozzie Guillen turned the miscue into an unusual foul ball. The towering pop by J.T. Snow falls on the pitcher's mound when second baseman Bret Boone called off the other infielders, then couldn't reach the ball. Guillen lets it bounce toward the third-base line. As soon as it is in foul territory, he grabs the ball, turning it into a foul. Snow then flies out.

IN THE NEWS: In a doubleheader with the White Sox, Orioles Brady Anderson leads off each game with a homer. This is the 3rd time in ML history and the first since Rickey Henderson on July 5, 1993. It's little help, however, as the Sox win both, 4–3 and 8–5.

In yesterday's 6–5 win it was Eric Gagne of Canada; In today's 9–4 win it is Jeff Williams of Australia; In tomorrow's 5–4 loss it will be Ismael Valdes of Mexico; and the next day it will be Chan Ho Park from Korea, in a 5–3 win.
