IN THE NEWS: In a unanimous vote, Nomar Garciaparra is named American League Rookie of the Year. The Boston SS is the first rookie ever to bat .300, with 30 homers, 90 ribbies, and 20 stolen bases. He also led the American League in hits and his 98 RBIs set a record for a leadoff batter. He's the first Sox rookie to win the honor since Fred Lynn, in 1975.
IN THE NEWS: The Phillies Scott Rolen is named National League Rookie of the Year. He barely qualified as a rookie, logging exactly 130 at bats in 1996 before breaking his wrist on September 7th when he was hit by a pitch. One more at bat would disqualified him for the award in 1997.
Former Red Sox IF-OF Wil Cordero pleads guilty to beating his wife, and gets a 90-day sentence, suspended for two years. Cordero was arrested on June 11th.
Former Angels IF-OF Tony Phillips pleads guilty to misdemeanor cocaine possession and is ordered into a drug diversion program. Phillips was arrested on August 10th.
Davey Johnson resigns as manager of the Orioles just hours before he is named the American League Manager of the Year. Baltimore owner Peter Angelos had refused to give Johnson a vote of confidence after saying earlier that Johnson would be back in 1998.
In one of their best swaps ever, the Red Sox obtain Cy Young Award winner Pedro Martinez from the Expos in exchange for P Carl Pavano and a player to be named.
The Rockies acquire 2B Mike Lansing from the Expos in exchange for pitchers Jake Westbrook and John Nicholson and OF Mike Hamlin.
The Marlins trade P Robb Nen to the Giants in exchange for pitchers Joe Fontenot, Mike Villano, and Mick Pageler.
