Saturday, November 1st

IN THE NEWS: The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum opens in its new home in Kansas City, Missouri. It had been occupying a temporary site there for four years.

Monday, November 3rd

IN THE NEWS: In a unanimous vote, Nomar Garciaparra is named American League Rookie of the Year. The Boston SS is the first rookie ever to bat .300, with 30 homers, 90 ribbies, and 20 stolen bases. He also led the American League in hits and his 98 RBIs set a record for a leadoff batter. He's the first Sox rookie to win the honor since Fred Lynn, in 1975.

Tuesday, November 4th

IN THE NEWS: The Phillies Scott Rolen is named National League Rookie of the Year. He barely qualified as a rookie, logging exactly 130 at bats in 1996 before breaking his wrist on September 7th when he was hit by a pitch. One more at bat would disqualified him for the award in 1997.

Former Red Sox IF-OF Wil Cordero pleads guilty to beating his wife, and gets a 90-day sentence, suspended for two years. Cordero was arrested on June 11th.

Former Angels IF-OF Tony Phillips pleads guilty to misdemeanor cocaine possession and is ordered into a drug diversion program. Phillips was arrested on August 10th.

Wednesday, November 5th

IN THE NEWS: In what Bud Selig says is Phase one of a realignment of the major leagues, his Milwaukee Brewers move from the American League to the National League.

Davey Johnson resigns as manager of the Orioles just hours before he is named the American League Manager of the Year. Baltimore owner Peter Angelos had refused to give Johnson a vote of confidence after saying earlier that Johnson would be back in 1998.

Thursday, November 6th

IN THE NEWS: Dusty Baker is named National League Manager of the Year.

The Red Sox trade Ps Aaron Sele and Mark Brandenburg and C Bill Haselman to the Rangers in exchange for C Jim Leyritz and OF Damon Buford.

Friday, November 7th

IN THE NEWS: Tampa Bay hires Larry Rothschild, former Florida Marlins' pitching coach, as its first ever manager.

The Yankees trade P Kenny Rogers to the Athletics in exchange for a player to be named.

Monday, November 10th

IN THE NEWS: Roger Clemens is named American League Cy Young Award winner.

The Reds trade P Jeff Brantley to the Cardinals in exchange for 1B Dmitri Young.

Tuesday, November 11th

IN THE NEWS: Pedro Martinez is named National League Cy Young Award winner.

The Reds swap P Donne Wall and C Paul Bako to the Tigers in exchange for OF Melvin Nieves.

The Marlins trade OF Moises Alou to the Astros in exchange for pitchers Oscar Henriquez and Manuel Barrios and a player to be named.

The Yankees trade vet 3B Charlie Hayes to the Giants for OF Chris Singleton and P Alberto Castillo.

IN THE NEWS: Ken Griffey Jr. is named American League MVP.

The Athletics sign free agent IF Dave Magadan.

Thursday, November 13th

IN THE NEWS: Larry Walker is named National League MVP.

The Minnesota state legislature turns down the Twins' stadium proposal by a vote of 84-47.

Monday, November 17th

IN THE NEWS: The Diamondbacks sign free agent SS Jay Bell to a 5-year contract.

The Braves sign free agent SS Walt Weiss to a 3-year contract.

Tuesday, November 18th

IN THE NEWS: The expansion draft for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and Arizona Diamondbacks is held in Phoenix, Arizona. Florida pitcher Tony Saunders is taken with the 1st pick by the Devil Rays, while the Diamondbacks select pitcher Brian Anderson from Cleveland. Following the draft, the Diamondbacks acquire 3B Travis Fryman from the Tigers in exchange for infielders Joe Randa and Gabe Alvarez and P Matt Drews. They also obtain OF Devon White from the Marlins in exchange for P Jesus Martinez. In a rash of moves, the Devil Rays get 1B Fred McGriff from the Braves in exchange for a player to be named, C John Flaherty from the Padres in exchange for P Brian Boehringer and IF Andy Sheets, SS Kevin Stocker from the Phillies in exchange for Bobby Abreu, and sign free agent P Roberto Hernandez to a 4-year contract.

In one of their best swaps ever, the Red Sox obtain Cy Young Award winner Pedro Martinez from the Expos in exchange for P Carl Pavano and a player to be named.

The Rockies acquire 2B Mike Lansing from the Expos in exchange for pitchers Jake Westbrook and John Nicholson and OF Mike Hamlin.

The Marlins trade P Robb Nen to the Giants in exchange for pitchers Joe Fontenot, Mike Villano, and Mick Pageler.

The Yankees obtain 3B Scott Brosius from the Athletics to complete the Kenny Rogers deal.

The Mariners sign free agent 2B Joey Cora.

Thursday, November 20th

IN THE NEWS: The Braves sign Rockies free agent 1B Andres Galarraga to a 3-year contract.

Friday, November 21st

IN THE NEWS: The Royals acquire 1B Jeff Conine from the Marlins in exchange for P Blaine Mull.
