IN THE NEWS: Chicago 3B Robin Ventura becomes the 8th player in history to hit two grand slams in a single game, doing so in the 4th and 5th innings of the White Sox 14-3 win over the Rangers. The last to do it was Frank Robinson in 1970. Ventura adds a double and a walk.

Toronto DH Paul Molitor strokes five hits and brings home three runs to lead the Blue Jays to a 6-1 win over the Royals. His hits include three singles, a double, and a home run.

Ron Maurer of the Triple-A Albuquerque Dukes plays all nine positions in his team's 4-2 loss to Las Vegas.

The Astros defeat the Reds, 10-1, in a game marked by a bench-clearing brawl that will lead to suspensions for Xavier Hernandez (8 games), Doug Drabek (5), Pat Borders (5), Ron Gant (4), Davey Johnson (2), and Terry Collins (2). Intentional walks backfire twice for Cincy. Ahead 1–0, they walk Jeff Bagwell in the 3rd (with Craig Biggio on 2B and one out)and Mike Simms homers. Undeterred, the Reds gave a free pass to pinch-hitter Dave Magadan in the 7th (with men on 2B and 3B and one out) and the score just 4–1. Derrick May then hits a grand slam.

The Marlins pound six Rockies' pitchers for 21 safeties, including five for OF Gary Sheffield, who drives in four runs before being lifted for a pinch-hitter in the 8th. Rapp will shut out the Mets in five days in a rain shortened game, the first Marlin to toss two shutouts in a row.

San Diego whips the Cubs, 11–3, as Ken Caminiti homers from both sides of the plate for the 2nd game in a row, tying a ML record. Only Eddie Murray (May 8, 9, 1987) has done that.

San Diego pummels Colorado, 15-4, as 3B Ken Caminiti drives home eight runs with four hits, including a pair of homers, again from each side of the plate. Caminiti has now hit a pair of homers, right and left-handed, in three of his last four games. He's the only major leaguer to ever to do it three times in a month. Jody Reed has four hits and four runs for the Pads. Andres Galarraga connects for his 30th homer, giving the Rockies four players with 30+ homers. This matches the 1977 Dodgers.
