IN THE NEWS: Boston's Chris Donnels hits a 9th inning homer for Boston's only run in an 8-1 loss to the Brewers and Scott Karl. It is Donnels last ML at bat. Watching the ball sail over the RF wall is Brew's pitcher Bill Wegman, installed in RF in the 9th inning. Wegman, with the Brewers organization since 1981, is making his last ML appearance as well.

IN THE NEWS: In a one-game playoff, Randy Johnson pitches the Mariners to a 9-1 win over the Angels. The Cy Young winner-to be strikes out 12 and allows just 3 hits as the M's make the post season for the first time in 19 years. Edgar Martinez is 2-for-3 to finish at .356 and win his 2nd batting title. He is the first AL right handed hitter in the last 50 years to win 2 batting titles, though its been done 4 times in the NL (Aaron, Clemente, Davis, Madlock).

Sparky Anderson resigns as manager of the Tigers after 17 years.

Montreal GM Kevin Malone announces his resignation, and is replaced on an interim basis by former Expos P Bill Stoneman.

IN THE NEWS: In Game 1 of the NL Division Series, the Reds score 4 runs in the 1st inning and go on to defeat the Dodgers, 7-2 behind Pete Schourek.

Atlanta defeats Colorado in Game 1 of the other NL Division Series, 5-4. 3B Chipper Jones homers twice, and Alejandro Pena picks up the win in relief.

The Yankees best Seattle, 9-6, in the opening game of their AL Division Series despite 2 HRs by Ken Griffey Jr.

The Indians defeat the Red Sox, 5-4, in 13 innings, to take Game 1 of the other AL Division Series. C Tony Pena’s 13th-inning HR defeats his former teammates.

Wednesday, October 4th

IN THE NEWS: The Reds take a 2-games-to-0 lead in their series, defeating the Dodgers, 5-4, despite 2 HRs by Eric Karros. SS Chad Fonville gets 4 hits for LA in a losing cause.

The Braves defeat the Rockies for the 2nd straight day, 7-4, in a game featuring HRs by Larry Walker of Colorado and Marquis Grissom of Atlanta.

Behind the pitching of Orel Hershiser, Cleveland shuts out Boston, 4-0, for their 2nd win in their Division Series.

Jim Leyritz’s 2-run HR in the bottom of the 15th inning gives NY a 7-5 win over Seattle for their 2nd consecutive win.

Friday, October 6th

IN THE NEWS: The Reds pound Hideo Nomo for 7 hits and 5 runs in 5 innings and cruise to a 10-1 win over the Dodgers to sweep the best-of-5 series. Ron Gant, Bret Boone, and Mark Lewis all homer for Cincinnati.

The Rockies best the Braves, 7-5, in 10 innings to stay alive in their Division Series.

Randy Johnson tames the Yankees as Seattle defeats NY, 7-4, for their 1st win of the best-of-5 series.

The Indians use a 5-run 6th inning to defeat the Red Sox, 8-2, and sweep their series.

Saturday, October 7th

IN THE NEWS: The Mariners defeat the Yankees, 11-8, at the Kingdome. Seattle hits 4 HRs in the contest and NY one.

The Braves win their Division Series with a 10-4 victory over Colorado. Greg Maddux notches the win, and Fred McGriff homers twice for Atlanta.

Sunday, October 8th

IN THE NEWS: Edgar Martinez’s 2-run double in the bottom half of the 11th innings gives the Mariners a dramatic 6-5 win, and a 3-games-to-2 victory over the Yankees in the Division Series. Martinez bats .571 with 10 RBIs against the Yankees. Ken Griffey, Jr., who beats the relay home to score the winning run, has 5 homers in the series.

Tuesday, October 10th

IN THE NEWS: Agreement is reached on the sale of the Pittsburgh Pirates to Kevin McClatchy and partners for $85 million.

Yankee owner George Steinbrenner is fined $50,000 for criticizing the umpiring in the NY-Seattle playoff series.

The Braves edge the Reds, 2-1, in 11 innings in the opening game of the NLCS. Mike Devereaux’s single is the deciding hit.

Seattle defeats Cleveland in Game 1 of the ALCS, 3-2, behind the pitching of rookie Bob Wolcott. With only 7 previous major league appearances, Wolcott becomes the least-experienced pitcher ever to win a postseason game in the AL.

Wednesday, October 11th

IN THE NEWS: The Braves take their 2nd straight extra-inning win over the Reds, defeating Cincinnati, 6-2, in 10 innings. Javy Lopez’s 3-run HR ices the victory.

Cleveland OF Manny Ramirez goes 4-for-4, including 2 HRs, to pace the Indians to a 5-2 win over the Mariners in Game 2 of the ALCS. HRs by Ken Griffey Jr. and Jay Buhner account for Seattle’s runs.

Friday, October 13th

IN THE NEWS: Atlanta wins its 3rd straight over Cincinnati, defeating the Reds, 5-2, behind Greg Maddux.

The Mariners go ahead of the Indians, 2-games-to-1 with a 5-2 win in 11 innings. Jay Buhner’s 2nd round-tripper of the contest is the game’s big blow.

Saturday, October 14th

IN THE NEWS: The Braves clinch the NL pennant by sweeping the Reds with a 6-0 victory in Game 4 of the NLCS. Mike Devereaux hits a 3-run homer, and Steve Avery stars on the mound.

Cleveland evens the ALCS at 2 games apiece with a 7-0 win behind Ken Hill. Eddie Murray and Jim Thome homer for the Indians, and Orel Hershiser gets his 3rd victory of the postseason.

IN THE NEWS: The Braves beat Cleveland, 3-2, in Game 1 of the WS behind Greg Maddux. Fred McGriff homers for Atlanta, while Kenny Lofton becomes the 1st player since 1921 to steal 2 bases in one inning of a Series game. The 2 teams combine for only 5 hits, tying a WS record for fewest hits by both clubs.

IN THE NEWS: The Braves win again, 4-3, this time on the strength of a 2-run homer by C Javy Lopez. Tom Glavine is the winning pitcher.

IN THE NEWS: The Cardinals hire Tony LaRussa as manager, replacing Mike Jorgenson.

The Yankees name Bob Watson GM, replacing Gene Michael.

Plans are approved for a new $320 million stadium for the Seattle Mariners.

IN THE NEWS: Anheuser-Busch, which has owned the Cardinals for 42 years, announces plans to sell the team.

The Braves take a 3-games-to-1 lead in the Series with a 5-2 win behind Steve Avery. Albert Belle, Manny Ramirez, and Ryan Klesko all homer.

IN THE NEWS: In a pitcher’s duel, the Braves win Game 6 of the Series, 1-0, on a combined 1-hitter by Tom Glavine and Mark Wohlers. David Justice’s 6th-inning homer accounts for the game’s only run. In winning, the Braves become the 1st team to win World Championships representing three different cities-Boston, Milwaukee, and Atlanta. C Tony Pena’s leadoff single in the 6th is Cleveland’s only hit.
