IN THE NEWS: Pitching against the Padres, Expos P Pedro Martinez (4–1) retires the first 27 batters, only to see the Pods Bip Roberts lead off the 10th inning with a double. Reliever Mel Rojas then retires the next three batters. San Diego starter Joey Hamilton is almost as good, giving up just three hits and no runs through nine innings. Reliever Brian Williams yields Jeff Treadway's RBI single in the top of the 10th. With the rules regarding no-hitters revised in 1991, Martinez receives credit for neither a perfect game nor a no-hitter. The win moves the Expos to within three games of the National League East-leading Phillies.

Rangers 3B Dean Palmer, hitting .333 with nine home runs and 24 RBIs in his first 114 at-bat, ruptures the biceps tendon in his left arm while swinging at, and missing, a pitch from Minnesota's Kevin Tapani. Palmer will be sidelined until the final week of the season. Tapani goes on to shut out Texas, 4-0.

The Giants recall replacement IF Joel Chimelis from Phoenix. SF players will call meetings in protest of his presence and he will be returned to the minors in two days without appearing in a game.

IN THE NEWS: The Dodgers Hideo Nomo strikes out 16 Pirates. Nomo is the 1st pitcher since Dwight Gooden in 1985 to record a 14 K and 16 K game in the same season. Both of Gooden's games came against the Giants' Jim Gott, now a reliever for the Pirates.

Minnesota defeats California by a score of 8-5, despite five hits, including two doubles, by Angels' 3B Tony Phillips.

Giants' utility IF Mike Benjamin, filling in for injured Matt Williams, compiles one of the best 3-game streaks this century. On June 11, Benjamin went 4-for-6 against the Expos, followed with 4-for-6 against the Cubs on June 13, and finishes with a 6-for-7 against Chicago today. The 14 hits in three games sets a new ML mark, and his 10 hits in two games ties the league record.
