IN THE NEWS: Former Reds marketing director Charles Levy, in a deposition in support of fired Controller Tom Sabo's suit against the Reds, says Marge Schott referred to former Reds Eric Davis and Dave Parker as "million-dollar niggers." He also says she had a swastika arm band at home. Roger Blaemire, a former veep, testifies that he also heard her use racial slurs.
IN THE NEWS: Marge Schott issue a statement saying. "I am not a racist." On the 20th she will issue a statement saying her use of the word "nigger" and owning the Nazi arm band were not meant to offend.
IN THE NEWS: The Rockies sign free agent 1B Andres Galarraga who rejoins Don Baylor, his hitting coach with the Cards. Galarraga is coming off his second injury-plagued year, having missed 44 days of the season after being hit on the wrist by a Wally Whitehurst pitch in the 3rd game of the season
The Athletics trade SS Walt Weiss to the Marlins for C Eric Helfand and a player to be named.
The Rockies make their first trade a good one, sending OF Kevin Reimer to the Brewers for OF Dante Bichette. Bichette hit .287 for Milwaukee, but just .246 in the 2nd half of the year.
IN THE NEWS: The Pirates trade 2B Jose Lind to the Royals for pitchers Dennis Moeller and Joel Johnston.
Eric Karros is named the National League's Rookie of the Year. The Dodger 1B hit .257 with 20 homers, and was the first Dodger rookie to reach 20 home runs since Frank Howard in 1960.
IN THE NEWS: The American League names Milwaukee SS Pat Listach the Rookie of the Year. Listach was recalled on April seven to replace the injured Bill Spiers and hit .290. He was the first Brewer to steal 50 bases in a season.
IN THE NEWS: Marge Schott is quoted in today's NY Times as saying, that Adolph Hitler was initially good for Germany, that her references to "niggers" was in jest, and she couldn't understand why the word "Jap" was offensive. The ML will appoint a 4-man committee to investigate Schott.
