IN THE NEWS: The Yankees sign free agent OF Danny Tartabull to a 5-year contract.

Tuesday, January 7th

IN THE NEWS: P Tom Seaver and Rollie Fingers are elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Seaver finishes with a record 98.8% of the votes cast. Pete Rose, ineligible because of his ban from baseball, receives 41 write–in votes.

Thursday, January 9th

IN THE NEWS: Former Yankee Joe Pepitone is charged with assault after a scuffle at a hotel in Kiamesha Lake, NY. The fight started when Pepitone was called a "has-been."

Friday, January 10th

IN THE NEWS: The Yankees trade 2B Steve Sax to the White Sox in exchange for P Melido Perez, Domingo Jean and Bob Wickman.

IN THE NEWS: The Mets trade OF Mark Carreon and P Tony Castillo to the Tigers in exchange for P Paul Gibson and Randy Marshall.

IN THE NEWS: A group calling itself The Baseball Club of Seattle announces that it will attempt to buy the Mariners for $100 million. Some $75 million of the money will come from Hiroshi Yamauchi, president of Nintendo Co., Ltd., of Osaka, Japan.

IN THE NEWS: Tigers 1B Cecil Fielder avoids arbitration by agreeing to a $4.5 million contract, for the largest single–season deal in history.

Friday, January 31st

IN THE NEWS: The Pirates sign OF Barry Bonds to a one-year contract worth $4.7 million, the largest-ever one-year deal.
