Monday, April 6th

IN THE NEWS: The Seattle Mariners lose to the Texas Rangers, 12–10, on Opening Day, allowing Texas to score nine runs with two outs in the 8th inning. The game draws 55,918 to the Kingdome.

A crowd of 44,568 sees the Orioles defeat the Indians, 2–0, as they play the 1st game ever in Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Rick Sutcliffe hurls the shutout for Baltimore.

Toronto's Jack Morris sets a record with his 13th consecutive Opening Day start, as he goes all the way in defeating the Tigers, 4–2.

Mets reliever Jeff Innis is credited with the win over the Cardinals in NY's 4–2 Opening Day victory. In 1991, Innis became the only pitcher in baseball history to appear in at least 60 games with neither a win nor a save.

IN THE NEWS: On the 1st pitch of the Mets–Cardinals game, Vince Coleman and Donovan Osborne are both injured when Coleman beats out a bunt for a hit. Coleman sustains a strained left hamstring while running and Osborne sprains his left ankle while covering on the play in his major league debut. Both players are eventually forced to leave the game.

Prosecutors drop rape charges against Mets P Dwight Gooden and OF Vince Coleman and Daryl Boston. On March 3, a 31–year–old woman had accused the players of raping her on March 30, 1991.

IN THE NEWS: San Diego's Dave Eiland becomes the 9th pitcher in history to homer in his 1st major league at bat. He connects against Bob Ojeda of the Dodgers in an 8–3 Padre win. Eiland does enter the trivia books as also he serves up a homer to the first batter he faces. Rookie pitcher Jim Bullinger will also homer on his 1st ML at bat this year. The winless Eiland will end the year on another trivia record note: he joins Buster Narum and Ed Hobaugh, both in 1963, as pitchers with more homers than wins in a year.
