IN THE NEWS: Jeff Bagwell is named the National League Rookie of the Year and is the first Astro to win the award. He hit .294 with a team-leading 15 homers and 82 RBIs. His 82 walks also led the Astros. Bagwell was picked in the 4th round of the 1989 draft by the Red Sox, then traded in the 1990 stretch drive for pitcher Larry Andersen.
IN THE NEWS: Terry Pendleton of the Braves wins the National League MVP Award. The third baseman led the NL in batting average and hits, tied for first in total bases and was 3rd in slugging. He'll be named Comeback Player of the Year—the first player to raise his average 80 points and add 15 home runs—and win his 3rd Gold Glove. Barry Bonds is runner-up; the two will switch places next year.
IN THE NEWS: The Twins' Chuck Knoblach is named the American League Rookie of the Year. Knoblach hit .281 and stole 25 bases in 30 tries. His 15 post-season hits is a record for first-year players.
IN THE NEWS: Cal Ripken, Jr. is named the American League MVP, beating out Cecil Fielder of Detroit. The Gold Glove third baseman hit .323, 34 homers, and 114 RBIs.
IN THE NEWS: The Dodgers acquire OF Eric Davis and P Kip Gross from the Reds in exchange for P Tim Belcher and John Wetteland. The Dodgers have high expectations of the brittle Davis, but he'll play in just 76 games in 1992.
The Mets sign free agent 1B Eddie Murray to a 2-year, $7.5 million contract.
