IN THE NEWS: Jim Palmer, who is in the Orioles camp as a non-roster player, has a shaky outing against the Red Sox, giving up five hits and two runs in two innings. Palmer, who retired in 1984, will retire again tomorrow, citing a hamstring injury.

Tuesday, March 12th

IN THE NEWS: Commissioner Fay Vincent orders a ban on the use of smokeless tobacco in the Class A Appalachian and Northwest leagues and the rookie Pioneer and Gulf Coast leagues.

At a gambling trial in Mississippi, Philadelphia Phillies OF Lenny Dykstra admits to having lost $78,000 playing poker during the 1988 and 1989 off-seasons.

IN THE NEWS: The Angels obtain DH Dave Parker from the Brewers in exchange for OF Dante Bichette and a player to be named later.

Monday, March 18th

IN THE NEWS: California hurler Jim Abbott, born without a right hand, lashes a 400-foot triple in an exhibition game against the Giants in Scottsdale, Arizona. Rick Reuschel surrenders the 3-bagger.

Friday, March 22nd

IN THE NEWS: At Sotheby's in New York, a 1909-10 tobacco card in mint condition of Honus Wagner sells for $451,000 (with the 10% auction house premium) to hockey star Wayne Gretzky and LA Kings owner Bruce McNall. A 1952 Topps card of Mickey Mantle goes for $49,500, tripling the pre-auction estimate, while a baseball, signed by 12 players at the 1939 Hall of Fame induction ceremony, sells for $20,900.

Tuesday, March 26th

IN THE NEWS: Pinch-hitter Dan Lehrman of Ball State ties an NCAA record by hitting two homers in the same inning in a 13-8 victory over Indians-Purdue.

Thursday, March 28th

IN THE NEWS: Methodist College defeats Maryville, 43-0, to set an NCAA record for runs in a game. The previous record of 42 had been set by King College in 1902. Methodist scores 15 runs in the 1st inning, and strokes 34 hits in the contest, including seven by Brandon Bridgers.
