Monday, January 7th

IN THE NEWS: Pete Rose is released from federal prison in Marion, Illinois, after serving five months for tax evasion. He will now begin the second part of his sentence, consisting of 1,000 hours of community service at Cincinnati inner-city schools.

Tuesday, January 8th

IN THE NEWS: Rod Carew, Gaylord Perry, and Ferguson Jenkins are elected to the Hall of Fame, with Carew becoming the 22nd player to be named in his first year of eligibility.

Wednesday, January 9th

IN THE NEWS: Former Padres and Orioles IF Alan Wiggins dies in a Los Angeles hospital at age 32, reportedly from complications due to AIDS.

Thursday, January 10th

IN THE NEWS: The Orioles obtain slugging 1B Glenn Davis from the Astros but give up the farm sending OF Steve Finley, P Pete Harnisch, and P Curt Schilling to Houston.

Saturday, January 12th

IN THE NEWS: Tigers obtain C Mickey Tettleton from the Orioles in exchange for P Jeff Robinson.

Sunday, January 13th

IN THE NEWS: While playing for the Oakland Raiders of the NFL, Bo Jackson suffers a career-threatening injury in an AFC playoff game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Originally diagnosed as a pulled thigh muscle, the Kansas City Royals learn of the severity of the injury just as spring begins. They will release Jackson shortly after, fearing that his baseball career is over, and he'll sign with the White Sox.

Sunday, January 20th

IN THE NEWS: Red Sox pitcher Roger Clemens is arrested and charged with assaulting a police officer during a disturbance at a Houston nightclub. Clemens' brother Gary is also arrested.

Tuesday, January 22nd

IN THE NEWS: Dodger announcer and Hall of Fame pitcher Don Drysdale is arrested on drunk driving charges following an accident in which a woman is injured.
