Saturday, September 1st

IN THE NEWS: The 3rd inside-the-park grand slam of the season is hit by Boston's Mike Greenwell off Greg Cadaret, as the Red Sox beat New York 15–1. Greenwell's grounder eludes Jesse Barfield in the RF corner: Barfield's shoetop miss on August 14 gave Polonia his slam. The last season with three inside-the-park slams? 1947. Greenwell's only other inside-the-park slam was also off Cadaret. Boston jumps on Yankee starter Andy Hawkins who lasted 1/3 of an inning. Hawkins has now pitched a total of one inning in three starts at Fenway Park and given up 18 runs (ERA 162.00).

Bobby Witt allows 10 walks against Oakland in seven innings, the 2nd Ranger in a four days to hand out 10 walks. Before this season, the last pitcher to hand out 10 walks was Andy Hassler, in 1974. Witt also has 10 strikeouts and wins, 3–2, for his 10th victory in a row.

Sunday, September 9th

IN THE NEWS: Oakland beats New York 7–3 to complete a 12-game sweep of the Yankees this year. The season sweep is a first for the Yankees.

Seattle's Matt Young strikes out four batters in the first inning of a 3–1 win over the Red Sox. He's the 2nd pitcher this year to K four batters in an inning.

The Cubs Luis Salazar singles in the tying run in 8th, then doubles in the winner in the 10th to give Chicago a 3–2 win over St. Louis. The Cubs now lead the Cards by one 1/2 games. Yesterday, the Cubs blew a 7–2 lead to lose 9–8 to the Cards.

Oops. Tiger RF Scott Lusader loses the battle to bright sun and soggy turf and makes three errors (2 fielding and one throwing) in the first inning against the White Sox. It's a first in the American League since 1925. The Sox score seven runs in the inning and coast home 13–3, snapping the Tigers' 7-game winning streak.
