McGwire set a rookie record with 49 homers and was the first rookie to lead the majors in homers since Al Rosen in 1950.
IN THE NEWS: Padres catcher Benito Santiago is a unanimous selection as the National League Rookie of the Year, now called the Jackie Robinson Award, while Pirates pitcher Mike Dunne is the second choice on 22 of 24 ballots.

IN THE NEWS: George Bell becomes the first Blue Jay ever to win the American League MVP Award, edging Detroit's Alan Trammell 332-311. Bell hit .308 last season with 47 home runs and a league-leading 134 RBI.
