IN THE NEWS: At Wrigley, Cubs reliever Bruce Sutter strikes out the first six men he faces, including three batters (Ellis Valentine, Gary Carter, and Larry Parrish) on nine pitches in the 9th inning. The Cubs score in the 10th against Montreal's Joe Kerrigan, and Sutter picks up the win, 3–2.

At Toronto, Red Sox sluggers Carlton Fisk and George Scott club back-to-back homers in the 2nd inning, setting a record. It is the 16th time this season that Sox hitters have hit back-to-back homers, breaking the record of 15 set by the 1964 Twins. Boston wins, 7–2.

IN THE NEWS: The Orioles forfeit to the Blue Jays when manager Earl Weaver pulls his team off the field in the 5th inning citing a hazardous condition—a small tarpaulin held down by bricks on the bullpen mound. The Jays are ahead 4–0 when the forfeit is called. The O's will end the season tied with the Red Sox at 97–64.

The Reds come back from an 8–3 deficit to beat the Dodgers, 9–8. Cincy scores four in the 8th and two more in the 9th on Ken Griffey's homer.

The Kansas City Royals sweep their 2nd doubleheader in two days to run their win streak to 16 games, the 6th longest win streak this century. Oakland again falls, 7–6 and 5–4. The Royals now lead by 10 1/2 games.
