IN THE NEWS: Padre Randy Jones beats out Met Jerry Koosman for the National League Cy Young Award. Jones led the league with 315 innings, and posted a 22-14 record for the 5th-place Padres.

Thursday, November 4th

IN THE NEWS: The first mass-market free-agent reentry draft is held at New York's Plaza Hotel. Among those available are Reggie Jackson, Joe Rudi, Don Gullett, Gene Tenace, Rollie Fingers, Don Baylor, Bobby Grich, and Willie McCovey. McCovey and Nate Colbert are the only two players not selected, but McCovey will catch on with the Giants in spring training and have a banner year at his old position.

Friday, November 5th

IN THE NEWS: New American League franchises in Seattle and Toronto fill up their rosters by selecting 30 players apiece from unprotected players on other AL rosters. OF Ruppert Jones (Seattle) and IF-OF Bob Bailor (Toronto) are the first choices.

The Pirates trade C Manny Sanguillen and an estimated $100,000 to the A's for manager Chuck Tanner.

Baltimore's Jim Palmer easily outpoints Detroit's sensational rookie Mark Fidrych to win the AL Cy Young Award.

Saturday, November 6th

IN THE NEWS: Former Twins relief ace Bill Campbell becomes the first of the free-agent crop to sign with a new team, joining the Red Sox with a contract calling for $1 million over four years.

Tuesday, November 9th

IN THE NEWS: Oakland releases Billy Williams, ending his Hall of Fame career with 2,711 hits, 426 home runs, 1,475 RBI, and a .290 average.

Wednesday, November 17th

IN THE NEWS: Minnesota's Rod Carew, who hit .331, wins the American League MVP Award. This is the first year in the past five that Carew did not win the batting title.

Thursday, November 18th

IN THE NEWS: The Yankees sign free agent pitcher Don Gullett for $2 million. The oft-injured Gullett will go 14–4 in 1977, but spend most of the next three seasons on the injured list.

Wednesday, November 24th

IN THE NEWS: The Reds Joe Morgan outpoints teammate George Foster to win his 2nd straight National League MVP Award. Morgan led with a .576 slugging average, and hit .320, scored 113 runs, knocked in 111, and stole a base.

Bob Kennedy is named head of baseball operations for the Cubs. His first move is to inform Jim Marshall he's fired as manager and Salty Saltwell, after a year as GM, is named secretary and director of park operations. Herman Franks, briefly a Cubs coach under Leo Durocher, will be named the new manager. Ironically, Durocher turned down a Wrigley offer to manage the Cubs for the 1977 season.
