IN THE NEWS: Padre Randy Jones beats out Met Jerry Koosman for the National League Cy Young Award. Jones led the league with 315 innings, and posted a 22-14 record for the 5th-place Padres.
IN THE NEWS: New American League franchises in Seattle and Toronto fill up their rosters by selecting 30 players apiece from unprotected players on other AL rosters. OF Ruppert Jones (Seattle) and IF-OF Bob Bailor (Toronto) are the first choices.
IN THE NEWS: Former Twins relief ace Bill Campbell becomes the first of the free-agent crop to sign with a new team, joining the Red Sox with a contract calling for $1 million over four years.
IN THE NEWS: Minnesota's Rod Carew, who hit .331, wins the American League MVP Award. This is the first year in the past five that Carew did not win the batting title.
IN THE NEWS: The Yankees sign free agent pitcher Don Gullett for $2 million. The oft-injured Gullett will go 14–4 in 1977, but spend most of the next three seasons on the injured list.
IN THE NEWS: The Reds Joe Morgan outpoints teammate George Foster to win his 2nd straight National League MVP Award. Morgan led with a .576 slugging average, and hit .320, scored 113 runs, knocked in 111, and stole a base.
Bob Kennedy is named head of baseball operations for the Cubs. His first move is to inform Jim Marshall he's fired as manager and Salty Saltwell, after a year as GM, is named secretary and director of park operations. Herman Franks, briefly a Cubs coach under Leo Durocher, will be named the new manager. Ironically, Durocher turned down a Wrigley offer to manage the Cubs for the 1977 season.
