IN THE NEWS: Owner John Fetzer announces that the Tigers have signed a lease to build a $126 million domed stadium along the river in downtown Detroit. The complex will seat 52,000 for baseball, and 60,000 for football. Lawsuits, a failed bond issue, and the construction of the Silverdome in nearby Pontiac will kill the idea.
In the secondary phase of the January draft, the Reds pick JC pitcher Tom Hume, the Braves get Sam Bowen, and the Red Sox, picking 1,653, take Roy Smalley. Duane Kuiper is picked by the Indians.
IN THE NEWS: Former umpire, now housewife Bernice Gera wins her suit against baseball, initiated on March 15, 1971. The NY Court of Appeals rules in her favor. Mrs. Gera is slated to umpire in the New York-Pennsylvania League starting in June.
IN THE NEWS: The BBWAA elects Sandy Koufax (344 votes), Yogi Berra (339), and Early Wynn (301) to the Hall of Fame. Koufax makes it in his first try and, at 36, is the youngest honoree in history.
The Yankees acquire veteran Johnny Callison on a conditional basis from the Cubs. They'll end up keeping him and completing the deal by shipping Jack Aker to the Cubs on May 17.
