IN THE NEWS: Johnny Bench wins the National League MVP Award with 326 points, 108 more than the Cubs Billy Williams. Bench had 45 homers, 148 RBI, and a .293 average for the Reds. His 355 total bases is a record for a catcher, one that will be tied by Mike Piazza in 1997.
IN THE NEWS: TSN announces Gold Glove selections. White Sox SS Luis Aparicio wins the 9th and final honor of his career, while Mets OF Tommie Agee becomes the first non pitcher to win it in each league. Aparicio has now won a gold glove in the 50s, 60s, and 70s.
IN THE NEWS: Carl Morton, who was 18-11 for the last-place Expos, receives the National League Rookie of the Year Award. Morton beats out Reds OF Bernie Carbo, 11 votes to 8. Both Rookies of the Year will be dead by 1983.
IN THE NEWS: The White Sox trade OF Ken Berry to the Angels for OF Jay Johnstone in a 6-player deal. The White Sox also make a rare trade with the Cubs when they send OF Jose Ortiz and infielder Ossie Blanco to the North side for pitchers Pat Jacquez and Dave Lemonds.
