Tuesday, December 3rd

IN THE NEWS: Robert E. Short, Democratic National Committee treasurer, buys the Senators for $10 million. James Lemon will retain 15–20 percent.

The Baseball Rules Committee moves to increase offense with new measures to lower the pitching mound, shrink the strike zone, and enforce rules against illegal pitches.

Wednesday, December 4th

IN THE NEWS: The Dodgers trade P Mike Kekich (2–10) to the Yankees for OF Andy Kosco.

The Astros trade 3B Bob Aspromonte, who lost his job to Doug Rader, to the Braves for infielder Orlando Martinez. Aspro was the last original Colt 45 on Houston's roster, and when he retires, he will be the last original Brooklyn Dodger.

Houston also swaps P Mike Cuellar, and infielders Elijah Johnson and Enzo Hernandez to the Orioles for outfielders Curt Blefary and John Mason. Cuellar, 8-11 this past season, will average 20 wins a year for five years in Baltimore. Except for the Frank Robinson trade, this ranks as the best for the O's.

IN THE NEWS: The Dodgers send C Jim Campanis, son of Dodger executive Al Campanis, to the Royals for two minor leaguers.

Tuesday, December 17th

IN THE NEWS: The owners announce they will increase contributions to the players' pension fund by $1 million to $5.1 million per year. Players vote down the proposal 491–7.
