IN THE NEWS: The Orioles lose to Cleveland, 6–0. John O'Donoghue wins in relief. Mike Adamson makes his ML debut for Baltimore: he is the first draftee to bypass the minors and go straight to the majors, though he'll make it to the minors next year.

Baltimore's Jim Palmer gives up a grand slam—but its in the minors. Sent to Rochester (International League) to rehabilitate from back problems, Rochester manager Earl Weaver starts the 21-year-old against Buffalo, in a game moved to Niagara Falls because of racial disturbances on Buffalo's east side. Palmer is given a 7–0 lead, but the Bisons score five runs in the 3rd, four coming home on a grand slam by Johnny Bench. Rochester hangs on to win, 10–8.

IN THE NEWS: At the launching pad in Atlanta, Billy Williams, Ron Santo, and Randy Hundley homer for Chicago, and Rico Carty and Felipe Alou answer for the Braves—all in the first inning, a major league record. Carty adds another homer later, but Glenn Beckert's three-run shot helps put the game out of reach. Ray Culp emerges the winner, 12–6.

In St. Louis the fans get boxing with their baseball in the Cards, 7–3, win over the Reds. After Bob Gibson pitched inside to Tony Perez in the 5th inning, the pair exchange words after Perez flies out. Both benches empty but there is no fighting until the Reds bullpen, led by Bob Lee, show up. It takes 12 minutes before the police are needed to restore order.

IN THE NEWS: The Mets end a 19-game losing streak to Juan Marichal with their first win against the Dominican Dandy 8–7. Marichal's win streak started in 1962. Jack Fisher is the winning pitcher.

Philadelphia C Clay Dalrymple collects six walks in a 19-inning doubleheader against the Astros. The Phillies win the first 9–0 and take the nightcap 4–3 in 11 innings.

Atlanta's Phil Niekro gets the best of rookie brother Joe as the Braves beat the Cubs, 8–3. It is the first decision between the pair.

In Minnesota, Mudcat Grant stops the Yankees to give the Twins a 8–3 victory. Mickey Mantle drives in all three New York runs with two homers.

Jim Kaat holds New York scoreless until two outs in the 9th inning when Mickey Mantle clocks a ball over the 457 mark to tie the score. The game is rained out with the score 1–1 and will be replayed on August 18. New York will win the replay, 1–0.
