IN THE NEWS: In 40 degree weather at Fenway, Boston takes its season opener with the White Sox, 5–4, as righty Jim Lonborg wins with the help of a 3-run Rico Petrocelli home run. A pre-season poll picks the Red Sox to finish 9th.
IN THE NEWS: At Yankee Stadium, Red Sox rookie Bill Rohr debuts and startles everyone by taking a no-hitter into the 9th inning. But Elston Howard lines a 3-2 pitch for a single to right-center with two outs. Carl Yastrzemski had kept the no-hitter alive with a spectacular grab of a Tom Tresh drive to deep LF to open the 9th. The Red Sox win 3–0, beating Whitey Ford, who allows a lead off homer to Reggie Smith and a two-run homer to Joe Foy.
IN THE NEWS: At Yankee Stadium, The Red Sox and Yankees struggle for 18 innings before New York wins it, 7–6, in a game that lasts five hours and 50 minutes. Carl Yastrzemski and Tony Conigliaro each have five hits for the Sox, but it is Joe Pepitone's two-out single that beats Lee Stange. Al Downing is the winner.
In the 3rd inning in Detroit, Minnesota's Tony Oliva belts one into the stands but then passes teammate Cesar Tovar between 1B and 2B. Oliva gets one RBI, and gets a single instead of a home run.
IN THE NEWS: The Cubs Adolfo Phillips drops a fly ball to allow three runs to score but homers and triple to help beat the Phillies, 8–4. Bill Hands is the winner over Chris Short.
IN THE NEWS: At Fenway, rookie Bill Rohr again tops the Yanks, beating Mel Stottlemyre, 6–1. Elston Howard's 7th-inning homer is the only Yankee score. Rohr will return to the minors after the Gary Bell acquisition and resurface with the Indians next year.
IN THE NEWS: Yankee pitcher Fred Talbot allows two Angel hits in topping California 5–2 at the Stadium. Mickey Mantle, playing first base, hits a 2-run homer and drives in three runs for New York.
IN THE NEWS: San Francisco concludes its first 3-game sweep at Dodger Stadium, as Bob Bolin beats Don Drysdale 5–1.
Orioles Steve Barber and Stu Miller combine to pitch a no-hitter but lose 2–1 to the first-place Tigers in the first game of a doubleheader. Barber walks 10 in his eight 2/3 innings, but in the 9th two runs come in on a wild pitch and an error. Miller walks none. In his first start of the year, Barber held the Angels hitless for eight 1/3 innings. Just two hits today matches the American League record for fewest safeties by two clubs in one game. Three catchers are used by Baltimore, a major-league record of sorts for a no-hitter.
In a doubleheader at Yankee Stadium, Mickey Mantle breaks a 1–1 tie in the 10th with a three-run homer off California reliever Minnie Rojas to give New York a 4–1 win. California takes the 2nd game 4–2 despite Mantle cracking a pinch double in the 9th inning. His hit gives him 2,215, one more than Joe DiMaggio.
Cesar Tovar's single is the only hit for the Twins against the Senators Barry Moore. Washington wins, 3–0.
