IN THE NEWS: Dodgers LF Tommy Davis suffers a fractured ankle sliding into 2nd base in a 4–2 win over the visiting Giants. Davis will not reappear until October 3rd.

In a 9–8 loss at Detroit, Boston's Chuck Schilling ties a major-league record with his 2nd straight pinch-hit home run in back-to-back games. But Boston loses both.

IN THE NEWS: Masanori Murakami arrives in San Francisco from Japan to rejoin the Giants as a relief pitcher, ending a bitter contract dispute between the Giants and his home team, the Nankai Hawks. Murakami will have a good season; appearing in 45 games, he wins four and loses one, saves 8, gives up 57 hits in 74 innings, fans 85, and walks only 22 while posting an ERA of 3.50.

To take the place of the injured Tommy Davis, the Dodgers bring up 31-year-old Lou Johnson from Spokane. The veteran will hit .259 in Dodger blue.

IN THE NEWS: Elmira (Eastern League) beats Springfield 2–1 in 27 innings, a new (but broken June 14, 1966) record for organized baseball's longest game. The attendance is 386 fans. Fred Beene picks up the win, pitching the last 12 innings. The game is scoreless for 25 innings, with both teams scoring in the 26th, and finally Elmira breaks through in the 27th. Elmira is managed by Earl Weaver.

A ML-record streak of 438 chances accepted without an error and 89 straight errorless games by Baltimore 2B Jerry Adair ends with his 8th-inning fumble in a 4–3, 15-inning loss to the Tigers.

Yaz hits a pair of homers and sacrifice fly, while Mantle is 3-for-4 with a homer. After Mantle doubles with two outs in the 9th, starter Jim Lonborg is lifted and Dick Radatz gets the final out. It is Lonborg's first major league win. Before the game the Yankees trade INF Pedro Gonzalez to Cleveland in exchange for 1B Ray Barker. Barker will help fill in for the injured Maris.
