Tuesday, October 1st

IN THE NEWS: The season ends, and there are no full-schedule players in the American League for the first time since 1910. Brooks Robinson played in the most games, 161, missing only 1. Ron Santo, Vada Pinson, and Bill White play the full schedule in the National League.

Wednesday, October 2nd

IN THE NEWS: In the World Series Opener, Sandy Koufax fans the first five batters he faces en route to a World Series record 15. John Roseboro's 3-run home run is the difference, as Los Angeles beats the Yankees 5–2 at New York.

Thursday, October 3rd

IN THE NEWS: In game 2, Johnny Podres scatters seven hits, Tommy Davis ties a World Series record with two triples, Willie Davis drives in two runs, Moose Skowron homers, and Los Angeles beats Al Downing 4–1 to go two up.

Saturday, October 5th

IN THE NEWS: Fans attending the first World Series game at Dodger Stadium see a pitching duel between Don Drysdale and Jim Bouton. A first-inning run is all Los Angeles needs to take a 3-0 World Series lead.

Sunday, October 6th

IN THE NEWS: Sandy Koufax beats the Yanks again 2–1 for a shocking World Series sweep for the Dodgers. Whitey Ford gives up only two hits, both by Frank Howard, who crashes a long home run in the 5th to start the LA scoring. The Bronx Bombers bat just .171 and score only four runs, the 2nd lowest total in World Series history.

Tuesday, October 8th

IN THE NEWS: Frank Lane sues Charlie Finley for $144,166 for breach of contract.

Thursday, October 10th

IN THE NEWS: The Mets take 1B Bill Haas from the Dodgers and P Jack Fisher from the Giants, while Houston grabs P Claude Raymond from the Braves in a supplemental draft for the expansion teams. In the draft, each of the eight original clubs was required to make available four players from their roster of August 31st (the Reds list five players). Houston and the Mets can pay $30,000 for each of the players chosen. Haas will never reach the majors, and the two pitchers chosen will make contributions: the other players go unchosen. Paul Richards, Houston GM, who had originated the idea of the draft, had second thoughts after seeing the players made available.

Saturday, October 12th

IN THE NEWS: In the first (and last) Hispanic American major league all-star game, the National League team beats the American League 5–2 at the Polo Grounds. The game features such names as Minnie Minoso, Tony Oliva, Roberto Clemente, Orlando Cepeda, Julian Javier, Felipe Alou, Luis Aparicio, and Zoilo Versalles. Vic Power receives a pregame award as the number-one Latin player. NL starter Juan Marichal strikes out six in four innings, though reliever Al McBean is the winner. Pinch hitter Manny Mota drives in two against loser Pedro Ramos.

Tuesday, October 22nd

IN THE NEWS: Roy Hamey retires as GM of the Yankees. His surprise replacement is Ralph Houk, who steps up from manager (309-176) after winning three pennants in as many seasons.

Thursday, October 24th

IN THE NEWS: Yogi Berra is appointed manager of the Yankees.

Sandy Koufax is the unanimous winner of the Cy Young Award.

Wednesday, October 30th

IN THE NEWS: Sandy Koufax wins again, outpolling Pittsburgh's Dick Groat 237 to 190 for the National League MVP award.
