IN THE NEWS: The Cards send newly acquired Don Cardwell, along with SS Julio Gotay, to the Pirates for Dick Groat and P Diomedes Olivo. Groat, the MVP in 1960, will be the All-Star SS for the next two years, and anchor the Cards' infield.
IN THE NEWS: The Yankees say good-bye to Moose Skowron, trading him to the Dodgers for P Stan Williams. Williams wins nine for the Yanks, but Moose is little help to the Dodgers.
IN THE NEWS: The Braves swap aging slugger Joe Adcock and P Jack Curtis to the Indians for P Frank Funk, outfielders Don Dillard and Ty Cline. With the addition of the 35-year-old slugger Adcock, 1B prospect Walt Bond will spend another year in the minors. Bond hit .380 with six home runs in 50 at-bats for Cleveland in September.
IN THE NEWS: ML officials and player representatives agree to return to a single All-Star Game in 1963. The players' pension fund will receive 95 percent of the one game's proceeds (rather than 60 percent of the two games).
After 61 years, the American Association (AAA) folds, with some of the franchises being absorbed by the International League and the Pacific Coast League. The PCL adds the Dallas-Fort Worth, TX; Denver, CO and Oklahoma City, OK Clubs and drops the Vancouver, BC club. The International League adds the Indianapolis, IN and Little Rock, AK clubs. As a result, both leagues became ten club leagues.
