Monday, March 5th

IN THE NEWS: Cincinnati 3B Gene Freese, 28, suffers a severe right ankle fracture and torn ligaments sliding into 2B in the Reds first intrasquad game. He will not return until August 17th and his play will suffer as a result of the injury.

Tuesday, March 6th

IN THE NEWS: St. Louis voters approve a bond issue that will fund the improvements necessary to build a new downtown stadium for the Cardinals.

Saturday, March 10th

IN THE NEWS: Because it does not allow black guests, the Phillies leave Jack Tar Harrison Hotel and move to Rocky Point Motel, 20 miles outside Clearwater, FL.

Wednesday, March 21st

IN THE NEWS: Philadelphia retires P Robin Roberts' number 36.

Thursday, March 22nd

IN THE NEWS: A former Giant—requesting anonymity—reveals that Bobby Thomson's home run in the 1951 playoffs against the Dodgers was helped by a sign-stealing clubhouse spy. The spying is claimed to have gone on for the last three months of the season. Thomson, along with former manager Leo Durocher, vehemently deny that he received help, but a source close to the team confirms the spy operation.

IN THE NEWS: William DeWitt buys the Reds from the Crosley Foundation for $4.625 million.

Saturday, March 24th

IN THE NEWS: The Phillies trade holdout 3B Andy Carey and IF Lou Vassie to the White Sox for P Cal McLish. Chicago then trades Carey to the Dodgers for IF Ramon Conde and Jim Koranda.

The Red Sox swap P Tom Borland for 18-year veteran Dave Philley, who was picked by the Houston Colt 45's in the expansion draft.
